Hey friend! At His Table is a blog that focuses on what truly matters in life. My posts are here to inspire you to slow down, relax, and be present.

Just Do It

Why does so many excuses get in the way of having dinner with others? It is so easy to not set a date to eat with other people because hopefully something would come up that would make that day not available. Your life could seem so busy that thinking of cooking and eating with others would take precious time away from you when you feel like you really need that time to get some rest. You might even get uncomfortable about eating with people that you are not, well comfortable with. Or you might feel like money is an issue so going out to eat or having company is not in the budget. All these reasons come up when someone asks to eat dinner with you and I know this because these are ALL the thoughts that have ran through my mind.

I am here to tell you that sharing food with others should be something that is a priority and something that you should not put much thought into because then you will back out of it (trust me). We are not called to live complex, unattached lives. Busyness should not control us. Money should not control us. Our comfort should not control us. Our lives are about building community and forming relationships. What better way than to share a meal together.

Below I have collected pictures of my dinners shared with other people. These people invited Dan and I to eat at their house and every time we get asked this, my heart explodes. It may seem like not a big deal for some people but to me, I appreciate it so much. Also, I will put notes below the pictures that could help you with future dinners that you have. My friends kept it simple and did whatever was easy which is perfect! Cooking dinners does not need to be stressful. Relax and be filled with joy.

Dinner w/ Sarah and Michael. This is some good Italian eats right here! Homemade meatballs, sauce and sausage served over rigatoni. Italian food is always a good go-to when you are looking for a simple recipe. It takes no time to make a simple sauce, served over cooked frozen raviolis. Add a side salad and bread and you are set!

Dinner with Rachel, James and Emma (cannot handle those cheeks right now). This lovely couple have a baby and I felt so special that they were happy to cook for us! They kept it simple but yummy which I loved. They grilled BBQ chicken on the grill and made roasted potatoes and brussel sprouts for the sides. It was perfect and totally satisfying.

Dinner w/ Bill and Marcia. Boy, was this a delicious burger. Marcia had her children at her house the weekend we were coming over. We were meeting them right after their children left and she wanted to keep it easy since her weekend was pretty full. She had chips and salsa out for a little before meal treat (great idea). Then she grilled Bubba burgers and marinated zucchini and red onion. She through together a simple salad by chopping up cucumbers and tomatoes and topping it with cheese. She also marinated some mushrooms and had blue cheese that we could put on our burgers. This meal was AMAZING and it caused no stress and it was so easy to throw together.

Dinner w/ Donna and Ernie. This meal was more than simple even though Donna did act like it was so easy. Besides the amazing food above which was restaurant quality and probably my favorite meal I have ever had, I want to showcase something that Donna does when she invites Dan and I over. When she invites us over she makes sure that we set a date at the moment of the invite. She would ask me, "Let's do dinner. How does Monday or Tuesday sound"? Then we pick a date right away and move forward with this. There is no overthinking here. It is so freeing. Many people do not take the initiative to set a date so urgent but I much appreciate it.
